Major Project - Promotional Poster

So many choices of what topic to choose. Having returned from the Tasmanian trip it seemed I should be using some of the photos taken there.

Initially my thoughts were to do something on environment and forestry since quite a bit of focus was on getting images for the UN competition on year of the forest.

While we were at Port Arthur I spent a lot of time in the Commandant's house taking photos of various rooms and items within the house. I had intended to do a portfolio on the house and figured it would be good to do a travel poster on that aspect of Port Arthur tourism. Luckily I had purchased s booklet about Port Arthur that contained information about the hours and images that I could use for my scan.

I took a wide angle view from the entryway that looked up the stairway and the viewer can see all the way to the back of the house looking through a lovely wooden archway. The photo was ideal for the background of my poster. It was a welcoming shot with carpeted floor, lovely wall paper, a vista to the back of the house and best of all from the standpoint of adding large text to the head of the poster it had a large blank ceiling.

The choice of photos was fairly easy because they were images I liked. A concern is that some of the images have hotspots or have overexposed areas that could not be fixed completely. The problem is mainly due to low light in the rooms as a conservation issue however some rooms had strong window light coming in causing the window to blowout. I was aware of this at the time of shooting but access to the rooms was limited to doorways and I had to shoot with the equipment and conditions available as we were departing the next morning with no opportunity to reshoot. That said, I exposed for the items in the room trying for the best shots possible. Not only was external light a problem so was interior lighting. Some rooms had very low lighting with the exception of desk lamps. I'm satisfied I got the images of items I wanted but the lamps have hot spots.

The design was fairly straight forward with the central arch and the leading line to the back of the house. There was ample room on either side of the arch to install a row of photos on either side go give the viewers a glimpse of what was in store for their visit.

The ceiling over the archway had plenty of space for a two line heading, a small photo of one of the Commandants. Initially I thought I should use some element to hide the ceiling and add something that said Port Arthur. I tried a few things including extracting a piece of wall from another photo to use as a faded background for the text. In the end I didn't like it and felt it didn't suit the mood of the poster so it was removed. The font for the heading is one that is easy to read but still has elegance to it befitting the topic. The colour used for the heading text was sampled from the wall paper in the entry way to keep everything tied together and it also woks well with the blue of the stairs. There was a bit of awkward space one either side of the Commandant's photo in the heading and to fix that I added two graphic elements that complement the heading font.

Text was added to the fore ground of the poster as something to entice viewers to visit the house. I used white text over the dark carpet to lead the viewers eye into the photo to the white at the top of the stairs as well to the images around on the borders.

The project is not with out its problems. Mostly my fault for not fulling woking out my workflow and silly saving which resulted in my layered image being flattened. While frustrating it was a good opportunity to rebuild the poster and tweak it as I went along and made sure to save lots stepped versions.

Throughout the project I tried to make optimal use of guidelines and the snap to grid feature and tried to learn and use actions.

After completing the poster and saving the various version I realised there was a glaring spelling mistake even though several people had glanced at it. Oh well, it is all part of the learning process and a reminder to use the "check spelling" feature in Photoshop or create text in another application with as you type red underlining of misspellings.

In this exercise you will learn how to prepare the images for digital submission. This should be read in conjunction with the ‘Digital Submission Requirements’ document. You will need to submit – Your original unmodified source files (ie jpeg or RAW files straight out of the camera), The final images as high resolution print ready jpeg files, Low res versions of the final images suitable for a slideshow using the supplied template. You will also learn how to prepare your images for printing.
Tasks	1) Log on to your workstation using the student login. a) Name : student Password : student 2) Answer the following questions :- a) What are the pixel dimensions of the computer monitor ? 1920x1200 b) How big is an A4 page in cm ? 21x29.7 Get the Source Files 3) Create a folder on the desktop called ‘Working’ as follows :- a) Click on the desktop to activate the Finder b) Select ‘File->New Folder’ in the Finder menu bar c) Type in ‘Working’ and press ‘return’ 4) Copy the files ‘P123456.jpg’ and ‘P123457.jpg’ from eLearn into the Working folder. These represent your source files that you have captured with your camera. 5) Copy the file Slideshow_Template.psd from eLearn into your Working folder. Edit File 1 6) Open ‘P123456.jpg’ into Photoshop. 7) Add a text layer that says ‘This file has been edited’ 8) Save the image as a Photoshop .psd file in the same folder. Prepare File 1 for Printing 9) Flatten the image by selecting ‘Layer -> Flatten Image’. 10) Resize the image to fit on an A4 page with a resolution of 300ppi. 11) Select ‘File->Save As…’ and save the image as IM1-‘yourfirstname’_’yourlastname’-01 print.jpg with a quality factor of 10 in the same folder. PaulL Prepare File 1 for Screen Viewing 12) Resize the image to have a height of 1000 pixels. 13) Open the file Slideshow_Template.psd. drag Note: If it opens as a new tab then it away so you can see both images on the screen 14) Click on the image you just resized. 15) Select the Move tool at the top of the tool palette. 16) Click and drag the image onto the Slideshow_Template. 17) Drag it to a suitable location on the template. 18) Select ‘Layer->Layer Style->Stroke…’ and add a 2 pixel wide white border to your image layer to separate it from the black background. 19) Select the Text tool on the tool palette. 20) Edit the text to replace with your name, and with the name of the image eg ‘Boats 1’. 21) Select ‘File->Save As…’ to save the image as IM1-‘yourfirstname’_’yourlastname’-01 screen.jpg with a quality factor of 10 in the Working folder. Prepare Image 2 22) Repeat steps 6 to 21 for the second image file. Prepare a Canvas for Printing the 2 Images The Epson printer uses a roll of paper 60cm wide. You cannot send your images separately to the printer, but must combine your images onto a single canvas for printing. 23) Create a new Photoshop document that is 60cm wide and the length you need to fit all your images on – in this case 35cm. It needs to be 300ppi (to match the files you have prepared above) with a white background. 24) Display the rulers. 25) Click on the top ruler and drag down to position a guide line near the bottom of the canvas. 26) Select ‘View -> Snap To -> Guides’ 27) Open the 2 print files you created above. 28) Use the ‘Move’ tool to drag both images onto the white background and position them with some white space around them. When they get close to the Guide line they will snap into position. You may need to rotate them to fit them neatly on the canvas. 29) Save this file in your Working folder as ‘Boats-Print.psd’. This file is now ready for printing on the Epson printer. Prepare the Images for Digital Submission 30) Create a folder on the desktop called ‘yourname’-Ex09. 31) Double-click on the folder to open it. 32) Create 3 subfolders called ‘Yourfirstname_Yourlastname’, ForPrint and Slideshow. 33) Copy the source image files, P123456.jpg and P123457.jpg, into the folder called ‘Yourfirstname_Yourlastname’. 34) Copy the print files into the ‘ForPrint’ folder. 35) Copy the screen files into the ‘Slideshow’ folder. Submit the Images 36) Copy the entire ‘yourname’-Ex09 folder onto your USB drive. 37) Take your USB to the teachers computer and do the following - a) Copy the folder ‘Yourfirstname Yourlastname’ containing the source files to the folder ‘Imaging 1/Source’ on the desktop. b) Copy the files in your ForPrint folder to the folder ‘Imaging 1/HiRes’ c) Copy the files in your Slideshow folder to the folder ‘Imaging 1/Screen’ Cleanup 38) Delete the folder called ‘yourname’-Ex09 from the computer. 39) Shutdown the computer.

Major Project - Promotional Poster

To take advantage of and use some of the photos from our recent Tasmania trip my poster will be a tourism promotional one on Port Arthur.

At the moment the idea is to use a full bleed faded back image of the old prison as the background with a number of assorted thumbnail shots with text associated to each shot. The majority of the images will be original and a couple of scanned images from a Port Arthur booklet I purchased during my visit. Choice of main heading text has not been decided at this point. Number and choice of photos to use is still uncertain but I have more than enough for the project.

Exercise 8d Layers Adjustment Layers

Tasks	1) Open the document ‘Exercise 8c Masks.psd’ created in Exercise 8c. 2) Set the viewing percentage to 50%. 3) Make the Plane layer the active layer. 4) Select ‘Edit->Free Transform’ and use the handles to enlarge and rotate the image of the plane. Press the Return key to commit the changes, or the Esc key to exit without changes. 5) Make the Ship the active layer. 6) Choose ‘Image->Adjustments->Curves . . .’ and change the curves to lighten the image. Note – the original pixel values have been destroyed by this operation. 7) Undo this operation and we will try another (non-destructive) method ! 8) Ensure the Adjustments panel is displayed. If not select ‘Window->Adjustments’. 9) Click on the ‘Create new fill or adjustment layer’ icon at the bottom of the Layers palette, and select ‘Curves . . .’ 10) Make an adjustment to the curves and click OK. What do you observe ? Adjusts the whole Picture. We only want to adjust the Ship layer, so although this is non-destructive we will try another option. 11) Drag the Adjustment layer to the Bin icon at the bottom of the Layers palette to delete it. 12) Choose ‘Layer->New Adjustment Layer->Curves . . .’, and turn on the option ‘Use Previous Layer to Create Clipping Mask’, then press Return. 13) Adjust the curves. What do you observe this time ? Only adjusts only the ship layer. 14) Press OK. The adjustment layer is shown in the Layers palette. The bent arrow indicates it only applies to the layer below. 15) Click on the eye icon to turn the adjustment layer on or off. 16) Click on the adjustment layer icon for the layer. Further adjustments can be made without image degradation as the underlying pixels have not been altered. 17) Save the image as ‘Exercise 8d Adjustments.psd’

Tasks	1) Open the document ‘Exercise 8b Text.psd’ created in Exercise 8b. 2) Make the Ship and Plane layers visible. 3) Make Ship the active layer. 4) If it is not the top layer then either drag it to the top of the layers palette, or turn off any layers above it so you can see the whole layer. 5) Use the Marquee tool to draw an oval around the boat. (Make sure the Feather value is set to zero, or not too big). 6) Choose ‘Layer->Layer Mask->Reveal Selection’ (or click on the ‘Add layer mask’ icon at the bottom of the Layers palette) to hide the unselected part of the layer. Note that the Layer mask is shown in the Layers palette. 7) Select the Move tool and ensure ‘Auto Select’ is turned off. 8) Move the Ship layer. 9) On the Layers palette click on the link icon between the Ship layer icon and the mask icon to unlink them. 10) Move the Ship layer. How is this different to step 8 ? The ship and the mask move independently. 11) Click on the Ship layer mask icon on the layers palette and use the Move tool again. What does this do ? Moves only the ship within the circle. 12) Line up the ship and the mask, then click between the Ship layer icon and the mask icon to re-establish the link. 13) Make the Plane layer visible and active. 14) Use the ‘Select->Color Range . . .’ tool to select the sky. 15) Choose ‘Layer->Layer Mask->Hide Selection’ 16) Save the image as ‘Exercise 8c Masks.psd’

Tasks	1) Open the document ‘Exercise 8a Intro.psd’ created in Exercise 8a. 2) Turn off the Drawing layer, the Ship layer and the Plane layer. 3) Click on the Text tool to add a text layer to the image. a) Use the option bar to select a font, set the size to 75 pt, and select a colour. b) Click in the sky and type the word ‘Transport’. c) Click on the Tick icon at the right end of the option bar when you have finished typing. 4) You can use the Character and Paragraph palettes to modify the text. 5) Select ‘Layer->Layer Style->Drop Shadow . . .’ to add effects to the text. 6) Create another text layer with smaller text that says :- Seaplanes and Ships 7) Select ‘Layer->Layer Style->Drop Shadow . . .’ to add effects to the text. 8) Choose the Rectangle tool and draw a rectangle around the smaller text layer. 9) On the Layers palette drag the text layer above the rectangle layer. 10) Make the rectangle the active layer. 11) To move the rectangle use the Move tool. 12) To resize or move the rectangle select ‘Edit->Free Transform Path’ and use the handles. 13) Select ‘Layer->Layer Style->Drop Shadow . . .’ to add effects to the rectangle. 14) Set the layer Opacity of the rectangle to 20 %. What happens ? All of the box and shadow become 20% opaque. 15) Set the Opacity back to 100%, then change the Fill to 20%. How does this differ from the Opacity setting ? Only the box not the shodow become opaque. 16) Link the rectangle and text layers together. 17) Save the image as ‘Exercise 8b Text.psd’

Tasks	1) Copy the ‘Lesson 9’ folder from the server and place it on the desktop. (Remember to delete this folder when you have completed this exercise). 2) Start Photoshop CS4 and open the document ‘Image-1.jpg’ 3) Display the Layers palette. Note that only one layer (the ‘Background’ layer) is present. 4) Click on the ‘Create a new layer’ button at the bottom of the Layers palette. A new empty layer is created above the Background layer, and automatically becomes the new active layer. 5) Change the name of this layer to Drawing. a) Use the brush tool to draw on the new layer. Experiment with different brush settings and colours. See the Brushes palette for more preset brushes. b) Use the eraser tool to erase some of your drawing. (Note : Other drawing tools are outlined below if you want to explore at your leisure. For now we just want a layer with something on it.) 6) Open the document ‘Image-2.jpg’ 7) Drag the Background layer from the ‘Image-2’ Layers palette and drop it onto the ‘Image-1’ image window. Note that ‘Image-1’ now has two layers. 8) Change the name of the new layer from ‘Layer 1’ to ‘Plane’. 9) Open ‘Image-3.jpg’. 10) Use the Move tool to drag the image of the boat directly from its image window onto ‘Image-1’. Note you now have three layers. 11) Change the name of this layer to ‘Ship’. 12) Select the Move tool and ensure the ‘Auto Select’ option is turned off. 13) Move the image of the ship to a different location. Note you can click anywhere in the image window to do this. 14) In the Layers palette click on the Plane layer to make it the active layer. 15) Use the Move tool to drag the Plane layer to a different location. Note – You can use the Arrow keys to move the layer by 1 pixel at a time, or Shift+Arrow to move it 10 pixels. 16) Turn on the ‘Auto Select’ option for the Move tool. The tool now automatically selects the layer that you click on to move. What happens when you click on the background layer ? The Marquee tool is activated and all the layers are selected that are included in the marquee. 17) Go to the Layers palette and drag the Ship layer to underneath the Plane layer. 18) Click on the eye icons to turn the visibility of layers on and off. 19) Select both the Ship and Plane layers in the Layers palette. (Use the or Shift keys to select multiple layers). 20) Click on the Link icon at the bottom of the Layers palette. (Note the link symbols appear in the Layers palette to indicate the linked layers.) 21) Use the Move tool to move both layers together. 22) Click on the Link icon again to unlink the layers. 23) Choose ‘File->Save As . . .’ to save the document as ‘Exercise 8a Intro.psd’. (You will need this for the next exercise). Some other drawing tools to try. (These are all located together in a block on tool palette) :- a) Use the Marquee tool to create a selection, then use the Paint Bucket tool to fill this area with a colour. b) Make another selection area and use the Gradient tool to fill this area :- i) Select a Gradient pattern from the preset patterns ii) Select a gradient type from the type buttons iii) Click and drag on the image to define the size of the gradient. c) Burn and Dodge tools. d) Pencil tool e) Colour replacement tool
